I came up with the pop-up torch around 1991 or 2 when a well known
demonstrator said " you can't do that". It was an adolescent reaction on
my part and I built it half tongue-in-cheek.....but I've been using it
constantly ever since. I've demoed it at the CBA meets several times,
starting in '92 I think, and a number of folks have built their own
versions.
The gassaver is mounted atop a fixed pipe welded to a base.
The torch lays in a cradle atop a flat bar running parallel to the
gassaver pipe.
The foot pedal pivots on a fulcrum welded to the base and lifts the base
of the flatbar.
About 1/2 way up the flatbar is a swivel that allows the flatbar to rotate.
The flatbar has a twist above the swivel and runs through a slotted
guide ( welded to the pipe) just above the twist.
There is a linkage chain from the flatbar to the gassaver lever.
When the pedal is pushed down, it pushes the flatbar up from the bottom,
causing the torch on top to rise.
As the torch rises, the chain on the flatbar goes slack allowing the
gassaver valve lever to rise and open.
When the rising flatbar comes to the twist as it goes through the
slotted guide, the torch swings around as it rises past the pilot light
on the gassaver....thus lighting itself.
There are some adjustments where the torch cradle mounts to the top of
the flatbar to allow for alignment of the torch to suit different sized
torch tips.
There is a removable clip on the end of the linkage chain so that it can
be unfastened and the gassaver can be used as designed without the foot
pedal.
Plans??? We doin't need no stinking plans!!! We rely on the fiddle factor.
Hope this helps........Pete F
