When I was a demonstrator at DePere in '84, every detail was taken care
of. Tools right, materials right, gopher always available and also
spotted a problem with the tent as soon as I did and set about to fix
it, accommodations great, everything pretty much perfect. Especially
the striker who was more experienced than I at two-handed work and
knew just what to do with each blow. My only regret is that I was
sufficiently unaccustomed to public performance that I failed to tell
the crowd how good he was and ask for applause for him. All that
huffing does produce splendid results for the demonstrators and
everybody else.

As for the semi-secrecy of comped positions, I would assume it's in
part to avoid acrimony. I overheard a conversation at the '82
conference in which someone who had gone out of his way to perform one
useful task was belligerently demanding that he should get a free
bed. None of my business so I wandered off but I assume that
conference coordinators and volunteer managers need as little of that
stuff as possible.
