Most of the old blacksmith tools I've seen use a top/bottom swage set that
mimics the joint..
I've posted a couple of scans from "Werk und Werkzeug des Kunstschmieds" by
Otto Schimirler to the PhotoAccess site under the new heading of
Processes. This is an EXCELLENT how to book, that shows detailed cross
section drawings of various basic and advanced blacksmithing processes.
Text is in German, English and French but even if it was in Yiddish the
drawings are self explanatory.
If you can get a copy... do so ... at almost any price
