Good point. I have a wrought-iron/steel-bit axe head dug up in my
back yard, probably from 1860s. The poll is all mashed in the center
and mushroomed at the sides, probably used as a sledge to hammer steel
wedges or the like. Considering that 75 years ago, many rural familes
around here raised a dozen or more kids with what they could produce
on the farm and a cash income of only few hundred bucks a year, I'll
bet the original owner of that axe didn't treat it that way.
