Grove,
I have a Trenton anvil that is a bit soft. Most hammers will leave a
ding. I put
my forging hammers in the vice and run out the tempering colors with a
torch.
More than once if I need to to soften the hammer till it won't leave a
ding.
It's easier to clean up a hammer than an anvil.
