Was discussing this with a friend, and his comments were:

beecrofter: horn or hair would likely nitride the surface a bit, also have a
little bit of fats
beecrofter: part of a case harden mix
beecrofter:
Nitriding
Introducing nitrogen into a solid ferrous alloy by holding at a suitable
temperature (below Ac1 for ferritic steels) in contact with a nitrogenous
material, usually ammonia of molten cyanide of appropriate composition.
Quenching is not required to produce a hard case.
Process of surface hardening certain types of steel by heating in ammonia
gas at about 935-1000 (degrees) F., the increase in hardness being the
result of surface nitride formation. Certain alloying constituents,
principal among them being aluminum, greatly facilitate the hardening
reaction. In general, the depth of the case is less than with carburizing.
beecrofter: keratin is nitrogenous material, hair hoof horn
phlip_u: OK.
beecrofter: plunge the heated blade through a slave or captive
phlip_u: A thought.
phlip_u: Maybe the next idjit on a cell phone would volunteer?
beecrofter: I wonder what kind of pattern weld you could get by sandwiching
cell phone between iron
phlip_u: Lotsa cold shuts

He doesn't like cell phones either, btw ;-)

 Blacksmith's credo.

If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it is probably not a
cat.

And never a rider who cain't be throwed....
