This is a GREAT tool, LONG overdue. I just hope Google.com doesn't
overcommercialize it and render it useless.
What you're getting as search results from this engine are technical
journal references (from what I can see from the few quick searches I
did) that include the topics searched.
Most techinical articles have a bibiliography of CITED references.
That allows you to trace the information the author had available to
him. But many years ago, the "Science Citation Index" started compiling
these cited references into an index, so that you could find what
articles cited the article you already have. Hence, the article you
have was "CITED BY" these other articles. Unfortunately, the Science
Citation Index is extremely expensive, over $100k! Now we don't need
it. Click on that hypertext and you'll see those articles.
This allows you to take your search beyond the information the authors
of your article had. A very powerful tool.
BTW, generally speaking, a heavily cited article is an important
article. This doesn't always follow, of course, but is a good rule of
thumb.
