Bob,

If you do get a generator, make sure you understand how to maintain it.  All
the commercial back-up, diesel, generators I've run had to be regularly
exercised.  We did that every week.  During that operation, the unit needed
to run long enough to come up to operational temperature.  That was usually
at least 1/2 hour.  We also tested the transfer switch and put the unit
under load once a month.

In addition to the exercise and testing, we also had to regularly load-bank
our generators.  This was to prevent "wet stacking" in the diesel engines.

I don't know what the gas powered units require.  I would think not as much
as the diesel but I'm sure there are some maintenance requirements.
