For "clean" sine wave with no surging, I have a large Honda Inverter 
generator. Use it for portable radio operations (transceivers, amps, 
rotors, lights, etc.) and when the power fails in the house, it gives me 
all the power I need till the lines are back up.  
As a bonus, the inverters are very quiet, but at 58dB, will not scare a 
deer away.
