Sorry to say it but this will NOT work!  We have been having deer problems 
for over 20 years and we have learned a lot.  If it's close by, deer may be 
startled the first time they hear a sound.  If it happens frequently, they 
will ignore it.

If your friend is having problems with the deer eating his plantings.... 
good luck!  I don't know of anything that is successful for stopping this 
short of having a dog.
