I have worked with a lot of scrap sheet metal over the years and have to
say the softest most workable sheet I have ever used came from a water
heater shell. I have used most of it up teaching scouts. I have no
idea what the metal was and am suprised at its qualities since there is
no deep drawing evidence on a water heater shell. It may be that the
manufacturer just used the same steel for washers/dryers as on the water
heater, but the water heater was only rolled, so no serious work
hardening.
