One thing I would recommend is building a forge with a
firepot as opposed to one with just a flat air grate. 
You'll find it easier to tend the fire, and easier to
get up to welding temperature.  Dave Mudge posted a
link to his web-site with a couple of fabricated
firepot designs.  There are also a number of sources
for commercially available ones on the web.
