Last I checked copper was a little over $2 a pound.  It sounds like it would
and / or did cost as much for pure iron when you figure in shipping and all
that.   Certtainly not in all  but definitly in some copper can be a nice
alternative for the right projects.  Maybe cheaper than purer iron and
definitly much easier to get and way funner to forge than A-36.
