Dave,

Back 30 years ago the Father of one of my artist friends 
made painting art / airbrushes using old refrig 
compressors.  Sometimes the compressers would last a 
couple years before burning out, as making the conversion 
 involved opening the closed loop, which also vented some 
of the compressor lubricant as the freon escaped.   Last 
that I knew she was still using one of the spare frig 
compressors that he setup for her.  Seems to me that freon 
is all supposed to be reclaimed /recycled these days. I 
don't think venting  freon to the air is smiled on.

One compressor for home use might get winked at, but doing 
a lot of them, could  capsize your boat.
