Robert: I think you are on the right track here. I teach an intermediate
class out of my shop that emphasizes joinery, with M&T along with MIG, gas
welding and gas brazing/soldering. I also introduce students to the power
hammer. Project orientation vs. skill building is good if they have the
basics down.
For projects, you might consider:
Candle holders
Mirror frames
Tables
Smithing tools: Tongs, hammer, hardy tools, anvil dogs, etc.
If I have two students, I emphasize team work, with each student helping the
other with striking, drifting, riveting, etc with minimum use of power
tools, if appropriate. This approach seems to work.
