I use wet coal on the perimeter of the fire, I wet the coal seperately I use it for coking... though I have used water to control the size. I use a tin can on a handle with three holes punched in it... a tennessee valve I've heard it called. On the bad side I have heard it can blow out your fire pot...steam explosions Ted Jones
