   I have also used "all the above" on housing development projects, where 
thousands of feet of low cost railing was being bidded on, and where such 
methods where written into the contract. However, equal spacing is normally 
considered best practice, unless it will "mess up" the design. It is also well to have 
your standards of quality prominently displayed in printed notices near 
railing examples in a show room and/or in contracts. The "nitpicker" problem is 
easily stopped if your finished work exceeds the quality of the examples in your 
show room. In the past, I would measure the work and then measure the inferior 
show piece right in front of problem clients; worked every time.
