I found this definition on the 'web:

"Horsepower:
"The work done per unit of time. 1 horsepower equals 33,000 foot-pounds of
"work per minute or approximately 746 watts.

Let's see, that works out to lifting 16.5 tons a distance of one foot in one
minute.  That's one HELL of a strong horse!
