[TheForge] Percentage in ABANA

Mark, No question my number maybe on the high side. On the other hand I think 10,000 is too low. I know that there a number of double, triple counts if we use the affiliate membership rolls but that number alone puts the blacksmith population at greater than 10,000 for the USA and Canada. What the real number and whats a blacksmith anyway? Maybe 35,000 ?

  Dave,

Your math is a little skewed. There are many smiths, like myself, who are members of more than one chapter or affiliate (the more politically correct term). I suspect that the number of blacksmiths in the US is more like 10,000.

BTW Perhaps you should read the May 2004 issue of The Upset from the Mississippi Forge Council. There are two interesting letters to the editor, one from Mindy Gardner and one from George Dixon.

A very small percentage of ABANA members see theforge -- let assume 50 % of theforge readers are ABANA members -- something like 180 folks out of an ABANA membership of something 5000 plus. You do the math. More interesting to me is out of blacksmiths in the USA how many are ABANA member? Here is my guess. Of our eastern half of Tennessee group (AACB) -- their are something like 210 members. I would guess of the local forge groups only about 1/3 our members of the larger group. So that makes something like 630 blacksmiths. But only about 1 in 2 blacksmiths I know are part of any group so that takes the number to 1260. Now there are something like 55 similar "chapters" in ABANA. (I like calling them chapters -- it raises some folks blood pressure.) Some bigger some smaller but I think on the average ours is typical. That means today there maybe 70,000 blacksmiths in the USA and Canada. ABANA gets 1 in 14 as a member. That is my guess -- Your Mileage May Vary.

How many are subscribed to the forge and what percent are members less than 50%
I would bet a small percent of acctual ABANA members see the forge daily.
