Actually, your "long held belief" was codified by a man named O'Toole.  He
was the originator of the comment that "Murphy was an optimist."

Murphy's Law:  If anything can go wrong, it will.

There are also many corollaries, extensions, and specific cases attached to
the original Murphy's Law.

BTW, Murphy's Law was not originated by Murphy; it was another man of the
same name.
