Just looking closely at the note as it rings Andy...even on bells, you 
can actually see the wave as a blurring of the surface. A trick i used 
to use when i was building a lot of experimental musical instruments was 
to sprinkle a fine powder on the resonating surface. The powder gathers 
at the null points.
The guy talked with who was  making and tuning them  would  change the 
curvature of half the note in the final tuning, causing 1/2 of the note 
to flex opposite the other half. Wasn't able to observe the same thing 
on the smaller, higher notes, perhaps because of size.Pete f
