I use an old variac ( I have a couple dozen at this point, can't walk 
away from one priced at 5$ or less) to drop temp of soldering iron.  
Another useful dodge is to open up the handle of the soldering iron and 
put a diode on the hot side of the cord.  This will cut the heating 
cycle in half and lower the temp.
