[TheForge] The heartbreak of prices in the PNW

One reason why was that the era where every farm had a smithy was never the
case out here. The PNW went from backwoods to 20th century overnight. Even
if settlers did bring an anvil out on the Oregon trail it may well have been
tossed out by the time they reached their destination. The oldest hand tools
and such I've found out here tend to be from Oregon and N. California,
presumably areas settled earlier enough to make a difference. There were
several outfitters in Seattle that outfitted the klondike types for the
Alaskan gold rush. A friend of mine has a beautiful cross pien that he
rescued from an abandoned mine in the Chugach range, probably bought on the
waterfront in Seattle.

Smithing tools in these parts be painful expensive
compared to other places.
