Many Unions have learned their mistakes and are now stressing training,
work competence, quality and in many cases they work to get the job done
safely and ahead of schedule. Drug use and drinking are no longer tolerated
by many unions and padding the pay role with dead wood employees is not an
option. Extra people mean the job should go faster not that they are to be
sleeping or spectating. The Unions are fighting now to change the image
they got in the last few decades and many of the old practices are out as
they realize that this is the only way to compete and keep their membership
working.
There will always be dead weight on all jobs. Many of the problem workers
I've worked with are now gone. In time the dead weight will be off the
higher paying labor jobs, unfortunately it will probably be kept in
management as it is a hard place to fight nepotism.
