A couple of years ago, I actually tried to get some work on this
library- there was quite a big budget for artwork, and I applied to
build a stairway. Didnt get the job, but you never know why- I think
they awarded something like a dozen art projects, and had over 200
applicants for them. Most were not metalworking, but often with those
public art projects they dont know quite what they want, and you have
to tell them.
I got the feeling that this architect was one of those who doesnt play
well with others- some architects want to
design and control every aspect of their building- so they dont want
artists at all, and if they must have artists they want artists who
will do a nice 12" square white on white painting in the janitors
closet. Luckily there are other architects out there who actually like
to collaborate with artists, and those are the kind I try to work with.
