Fellows of theforge,

A couple of months ago I asked how you all dealt with rusty squares and bad
light. Figured since I'd asked, I ought to report my solution.

Moving at my regular glacial pace, I was able to make some attempts at
marking the pipe for my gantry crane in the last couple of weeks. After
trying to mark the square with various pencils, markers and soapstone, those
marks didn't reveal much on the variable and dark patina of light rust. So I
fine wire wheel polished it, which gave to many facets and didn't do that
well at removing the rust patina. So I buffed it with rouge and a cotton
wheel which brought it to a uniform fine polish. I then tried to fill the 2
3/4" mark with an El Marko type permanent marker. It being the shop marker,
the fine point was about a quarter inch wide, which worked out great because
I could then fill the line with a fine white Berol type pencil. Hell,
didn't even need my #1 diopter cheaters to transfer the mark to the pipe.
Worked great!
