Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is Eugene Mc Daid. For 19 years, I was the Blacksmith for a
museum in Ireland. I am actively seeking employment anywhere within the
US.
At the age of 17 years, I commenced my apprenticeship with Mr, Gerry
Taggart, a Master Blacksmith. This was set in the grounds of the Ulster
American Folk Park (www.folkpark.com), Omagh, Northern Ireland. 7 years
later, he passed me with flying colours.
As the 'Blacksmith' my duties included the three 'R's. Replication; to
produce facsimile's, Reproduction; to create objects from drawings,
diagrams etc, and to Repair of any and all antique iron works so as to
make the object appear authentic and as created. My duties also
included delivering talks on the archaic and almost obsolete craft of
the Blacksmith, to school parties, adult groups as well as visiting
dignitaries.
Other duties included the manufacture of specific ironware prior to
exhibits being opened to the public. Due to the 'Forge' being open to
the visiting public, the majority of my skills lie with the anvil and
hammer. I would like to have the opportunity to train someone else in
this master craft of ours.
I was also responsible for maintaining all security measures, gates,
fences etc. This work would obviously be undertaken out of sight of the
public, so as to minimise any risk of danger.
I could give a detailed list of the objects I am able to make, but that
list would probably need several emails. I shall simply say that if you
imagine any piece of ironware that was to be found in Irish and American
houses circa 1820, then I am able to produce it. I am also able to shoe
horses, but this area of the trade is not my speciality. I am also able
to put iron tyres on cart and wagon wheels. I am also quite handy at
working with wood.
I am also able to operate most (but not all) modern machinery
associated with the modern craft, such as welders, drills, Oxy-acetylene
equipment etc.
It would appear that, although my skills are required and requested
within the United States, no-one will consider employing me because I am
not a resident!!
I have emailed various groups within the United States, but they all
give me the same response: don't reside, cant employ!!
For several months, I have been considering (as my relatives have done
over the last two centuries) re-locating to the United States with my
partner, to create a new life.
If you are unable to assist me, please inform me of someone that will,
not might or maybe, but will!!
I would greatly appreciate any and all assistance, from wherever, in
helping me attain employment as soon as possible. I have set myself some
goals and timetables and would like to adhere to these as much as
possible.
Thanking you in advance,
Eugene Mc Daid
