The ABANA Forums: Tools and Tooling: Shop Setup
------------------------------------------------------------

By e-kinfolk on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 10:07 pm:

I am a retired engineer educated back in the days when an
engineer was expected to have the skills to make anything he
designed. During my working life I often went to the shop
and made something to try out an idea. Most of the other
engineers thought I was weird. At home I also had a shop for
both metal and woodworking, but I have never had
blacksmithing or controlled heat treating facilities at
home. Now that I'm retired I no longer have access to the
companies shop so I need to have my own.

I want to make woodworking tools, fixtures and other things
that I need around my shop. This might include anything from
a woodworking gouge or chisel to engraving tools to a violin
makers thumb plane to a jointer plane to a bracket, etc.
These are mostly small tools less than 10" long. The
quantity will normally be too small to interest commercial
heat or cryogenic treaters.

Because of the location of my shop I will need to use
electricity for heating rather than any sort of open fire. I
already have many tools, but little for forging or
controlled heat treating of steel. Among the tools in my
shop is a toolroom lathe and milling machine, tooling for
those machines, several grinders and the assorted hand and
power tools one would expect to find in a shop developed
over more than 50 years, but as I said earlier, sadly
lacking in blacksmithing and heat treating means.

What I am asking of this readership is assistance in
defining, costing and locating the blacksmithing and heat
treating equipment that I will need. Due to my age and
health some sort of small powered drop hammer would be a
great help, but for some of the more detailed hammering I
will also require a small to medium sized anvil and hammers.
Because of the controlled heat treating cycles that many of
the steel alloys require I will need a temperature
controlled electric kiln and for cryogenically quenching
some of the tools I will need a small Dewar of liquid
nitrogen and a means of utilizing it. When considering the
equipment, please bear in mind that I have not won the
$100-million lottery and that I'm willing to make what would
be economical or better done.
