Choice is good; so is experimentation. But rather than cutting on the forge 
shell, why don't you use burner collars, with sliding washers over a bit of 
ceramic fiber. This way you can mix and match to your heart's content. You can 
even use different kinds and sizes of burner to achieve whatever otherwise 
mutually exclusive goals you have in mind.
