Bob,

I don't think that's the same kind of flashback that he's asking about.  <grin>

But coal smoke is unburned volitiles from the coal, so ... yes, it can 
cause flash backs if it first gets drawn back into your air supply tube.  I 
don't know of any major concerns about the smoke going up the chimney, it 
cools off too fast.
