I agree, I have always preferred grates with holes such as this to the old
cast "clinker-breaker" style of firepot, clinker breakers seem to mostly
dump good coal into the ashes, which then has to be picked out by hand,
because I'm such a cheap bastard that I refuse to let any nuggets of good
coal escape.
I have used slightly bigger holes, up to 1/2" diameter, as I like huge
fires, but even a 1/2" diameter hole will not let much coal through, actual
clinkers (should they occur) can be fished out the top easily enough.
