There are a few refineries in AK. and while on balance we have pretty
reasonable fuel prices the company's reasons for high prices are varied.
North Pole AK has a refinery but fuel is about $.30/gl higher than in
Fairbanks some 20 miles away. This is of course because fuel has to be
shipped to the Fairbanks tank farms before it's shipped back.
None of the refineries on the Kenai are set up for North Slope crude so they
import it from the lower 48. Kenai Peninsula fuel is quite a bit higher than
Anchorage fuel.
Of course Anchorage fuel comes from the Kenai and North Pole so naturally we
have the lowest prices around.
My favorite company "reason" for high fuel prices is the cost of . . . .
FUEL.
