	"Useless" might go too far, but not optimal I would agree with.

	But in their times, were they not made of the best materials
	available, according to the understanding of those times?  I
	am pretty confident that had they discovered a vein of D2 in
	the mine, they would have been eager and happy to use it. :)

	This is related to what I see as a somewhat silly notion about
	blacksmithing in general, when people say that it isn't real
	smithing if it isn't "traditional"?  What in blazes is that
	supposed to mean?

	And, as can be seen by this thread, cutting isn't always the
	purpose behind a given knife's design and/or manufacture.  I
	say you are right in that our thinking gets so used to coming
	from a given point of view that at times we become less than
	circumspect in judging the choices of others.  It seems to be a
	common enough human failing.  T'were it not so, I doubt we'd
	have troops in the places in which we have them.  Who knows, we
	might not even need troops, period.
