Don't even waste your time thinking about egg crate material, it just 
does not do anything for you at all. Re-directing is a very hit and 
miss type of plan, just ask the people who live near some of those 
freeway sound walls. Often the walls just redirect the sound to 
another residential area via the law of unintended consequences. If 
you really want to deaden the noise you need to combine absorption 
and barrier technology. This website has some very good reading on
