[TheForge] green pipe acid tanks

Dave, the PVC pipe I use is actually white (well the caps are green). I'm
not concerned about any danger.

1. The pipe I use is at least 12" diameter and over 1/4th inch thick and
laid horizontal. It would take the sun a loooooong time to weaken that to
the breaking point.
2. Even if it did leak it is not a disaster. The acid is so diluted to start
with and then gets weaker as the summer goes on. By October I pour it on the
plants which thrive on it. Even when it's fresh my crow dips his beak in it
(he doesn't inhale) and doesn't seem to suffer any effects. If it did leak
(it's not going to burst and dump the whole tank) I'd dilute any that got
out with a flood of water.
3. If I were concerned about the sun I'd spray it with a can of paint or lay
something over it to keep the sun at bay..
4. I use the PVC only for long parts. The bulkier pieces go in plastic
(rubbery?) stock tanks which do not seem to be affected by the sun.
5. The lid is a piece of 2' Styrofoam sprayed with acrylic paint to keep the
sun off so the PVC gets little sun.
Hey Clyde

How are those green sewer pipe acid bath tanks that you made holding up? I
was just reading an item where it was commented that this person had some
of this pipe and after exposure to the sun for about 2 years it became very
brittle. I'd hate to see one of these things crack open on you some day
when you're loading parts for cleaning.
