I don't know how well it would work for removing the silver, but the
photographic solution known as HYPO or sodium thiosulphate is used for the
'fixer' which removes the unexposed silver from the film or paper. If you
leave the film or paper in the fixer to long, the idea in your case, all the
silver is dissolved into the fixer solution. I you try this, and you use
Kodak chemistry (available at any photography store that carries darkroom
supplies) just buy the fixer without the Hardener.
Your photo guy will know what this means. I believe some of the rapid fixers
are ammonium thiosulphate, faster acting but might be better for your
purpose if the process is viable.
