Terry,

Have you tried putting the new mirror behind the old one without removing
the silver form the detailed sections?  It may look good with all the flat
areas cleaned and the details silvered, I would suspect that if you do
remove the silver from these areas you may loose the details when putting
the new mirror behind it.

You may want to do a test before spending so much time in a direction that
may give you less that great results.
