Sulfuric will not work very well unless it is highly concentrated and 
boiling, yuck bad news. Nitric will work cold but is bad stuff if not 
handled properly.I am not saying don't use nitric, I use it almost 
daily but I have the set up for it (fume hood and protective gear). 
You must use acid proof gloves, apron, face shield, respirator etc or 
it will hurt you. And then you have to neutralize the used acid 
(best) or store it (bad idea).  Or you can use ferric nitrate which 
is the iron salt of nitric acid and will dissolve silver and which is 
much easier to work with. If you want more info on etching the silver 
with ferric nitrate contact me off list. I don't want to clutter up 
the list with non BS post oops I mean black smithing posts :-)
