Mike: The comment about hammer speed vs. thought process is sage advice. I
use a 25lb LG for creating very fine small leaf stems using combination
dies. Some say that LGs cannot be controlled as finely as air hammers, but I
have not found this to be the case. I have found that my best results come
from thinking before I lay the hammer to the work, so each blow does only
what is desired. Proper lubrication and pedal control really tell the tale.
I think there is a form of hammer-hypnosis that occurs when you see the
hammer do its work. Some folks wind up watching the hammer fall,
forgetting about the workpiece to some degree, thus not controlling the
process.
