[TheForge] handedness

The problem is, the center die has to be the hardest part of this machine to
build. So letting it become a part of the billet would not only be
expensive, let alone practical. I have tried a number of different
configurations with mandrels and other designs and the current design far
surpasses all others I have tried.
Last night I went online and searched the words jellyroll damascus. I found
several sites with detailed photos and how to tutorials. I noticed one thing
in particular, the majority of the rolled billets have a hole in the center.
So that's just my observation.
As for the drawing, I oriented it the way it is to show key features. But
your observation is interesting. Because short of this fact, things would
have been oriented differently.
