Hungarians do like their drink, that is for sure.
While the guys were shooting at the Russians in Budapest,
my parents were running across the border into Austria.
They were caught several times and sent to jail, but the
jails were so full they never stayed longer than three
days. The Hungarian Secret police were horrific bastards.
My father witnessed parts of a beating a priest got. They
beat him so badly that he lost control of his bowels. They
then made him eat his own feces, then beat him to death and
tossed him out a window and called it a "suicide". Those
were very, very bad days. My father and his cousins were
all black listed because they were aristocracy. They were
not allowed to attend the schools they wanted. The only reason
my father's father wasn't executed was because he was useful.
He was an architect who went from designing theatres and opera
houses to maintaining the roads. At the end of the war the
Russian soldiers took my great uncle Desmond and shot him
in the village square where he was mayor. They made my beloved
great aunt and my two cousins watch. Both cousins committed
suicide and my dear aunt died six months later.
All in all, the twentieth century was pretty grim.
