Any time it is imperative to preserve mill scale or surface 
characteristics I design to fasten mechanically.  I have to agree with 
Ries on this one.  Try blending welded areas to a #4 finish on 
stainless. Real headache.

Try www.ronyoungpatina.com/  He is the principal of Sculpt Nouveau in 
CA.  Real knowledgeable, a real gentleman.  His wife is directly 
involved and she is great to work with too.  They have sampler kits that 
are reasonable to get you started. I took a workshop with him at Johnson 
Atelier in NJ e few years ago.  Well worth it.  I bought the video for 
patina on steel.  I'm not so sure I would recommend it.  It shows 
process well enough but you really can't see the patina all that well.
