Bob,
I have taken a stone in a die grinder and run it over the ground weld to
slightly texture it and take out the grinder marks (if they're not too
coarse) or to rough up the polished surface so it would blend with
surrounding mill scale. It at least doesn't stand out as obviously as
smooth/grinder marked.
