Here are two shots of chisels.

The first is from the current Nat'l Geographic and shows chisels for 
decorative metalworking (like incising).  These three are from circa 
1600 BC in Germany.

The second image is one I took today, of a chisel from the Samuel Yellin 
tool collection.  It was made circa 1925, for decorative metalworking 
(like incising), in the USA.

Yellin and many of his men were European trained immigrants.  Clearly, 
they brought some ancient traditions with them.
