While not cheap -- a pole barn type shop / garage can give you a lot of
building for the money. A large shop building say, 30' x 75' could be in
the price range of $ 12 to $ 15 per square foot. Basic building with some
windows and large doors, concrete floor but not electrical, plumbing,
insulation, heating and interior walls etc. Assume you can add these or
have done by a sub contractor. As the size goes down the price per square
foot goes up, but the total price may better fit a budget. I am partical to
Morton Buildings, Inc. http://www.mortonbuildings.com/ I have no conection
with Morton except that they have built 3 buildings for me over the years.
Other folks do pole barn type buildings too, some at a lower quoted price
but be sure what is included. Just a data point for your wish list.

You could have your compresser, a hot water tank, and maybe a furnace out
of the way but easily accessible in there, as well as cleaning supplies
and
any chemicals that you don't particularly want near forge fires. That way,
your shop could be entirely dedicated to tools, work area, and steel
(trust
me, you'll collect some) with room for storage for light-but bulky stuff
in
a loft above. With a garage door in front, and a people door in back,
aligned with the prevailing breezes, you could keep things cool on the
summer, and have plenty of fresh air.
I really like the idea of having the compressor in a separate room / shed /
garage as per some of your suggestions. In the spirit of keeping marital
bliss....I think your solution (above) is excellent, although probably out
of budget. Maybe we could shrink the house square footage some more. After
all we will be spending most of our time in our shop & garage......
