Someone asks one of THE questions.

When I was four I accidentally devised an exercise for
doing the proverbial proctological exam. My father and
I were walking through Bowne Park in Flushing and I asked
him if I would ever see God. His response was quite good,
I have to say, when he said "maybe". Further dowm the
road of that conversation, I asked what was here before the
world existed. He said "God". So I asked what was there
before God, and he said with something like shrug "nothing".
This pretty well required that I conceive and understand
what "nothing" was. So I envisioned the universe as I
knew it, with the sun, planets, stars, galaxies... then
I removed the earth and everything else piecemeal. There
was a very black void left, but this was still not nothing
in my mind. It was something: empty space. So I imagined
that impoding upon itself and just as it winked out I got
that too brief glimpse "up there". It literally jolted me
and I have never forgotten the experience. It changed me
forever. Yeah, I know, I was a really weird little kid.
Now I'm a really weird adult.
