I'm unfamiliar with the nuts and bolts of any aether theories, but.. Check OUT this month's Scientific American! There's a brave bold article on the possible granularity of space and time, which also suggests that light may propagate through "empty" space in a way not unlike the way it propagates through "solid objects."
