Bob,
I have a large anvil on a cast iron stand.  It was made so a 
base of wood about 2" thick sits between the anvil and the 
cast base.  Bolting the anvil down to the stand with 4 hooks 
made from 1/2" dia rod made the whole thing stiffer and 
quieter.  The wood seems to provide 2 functions--height 
adjustment and sound deading.  I don't think it would be as 
queit if the anvil was mounted directly on the cast stand.

Another thing I like about this set up is that I can, with a 
little effort, slide the anvil & base into different 
positions in the shop, including out of the way.  Not bad for 
a 360 pound anvil on a 200 pound stand.
