Bettina:
Where in Western Virginia will you be moving? There
is a fairly active group of blacksmiths around
Harrisonburg that get together once a month. Contact
me off-list and I can give you contact info.
For stationary shop equipment, I think the following
is a minimum:
Forge with firepot and hood
Anvil
Post vice
Arc welder (if I was only going to have one welder, it
would be an arc welder)
Floor drill press
Bench or pedestal grinder
Horizontal bandsaw
In the nice to have category might be:
Power hammer
Swage block
Cone mandrel
O/A torch
The hand tools are too numerous to go into.
With regard to the shop, you might think about
designing it so that it is easily expanded. I
personally think that 24' X 24' would be a minimum.
You can not have too many electrical outlets, and you
probably need a minimum of 200 amps of service
