Um, well, I forget.  Leaking, as I recall.  Surmised that there was a
porous diaphram in there, IIRC.  I took it (or them?)  apart myself
and couldn't tell what the problem was. As you say, they were simple
and I had the original parts list from sears. Chuck wrote:

This was more than ten years ago.  Mid 80s maybe.  The repair guys
wouldn't take them because they had no idea where to get parts.  I
kept the disassembled parts for years and may still have them in a box
unopened since the move to a new shop.

I might have been more persistent (and learned something :-) if I
hadn't had the even older ones I got when I bought Donald Haines'
gear.
